How to Prepare a Business Plan to Apply for a Loan
Lenders do not fund a slide deck. They fund a purpose, numbers that talk to GST and banking, and an EMI the cycle can carry. Write that — then stop decorating.

A plan is a repayment story, not a pitch deck
Investors may want vision. A bank or NBFC wants to know what the money is for, when it comes back, and what happens if the buyer pays late. The document can be five pages if those answers are in it. A forty-page template with stock photos and a copied industry paragraph is how files get a polite query list.
One sentence of purpose
Write one sentence before the table: “stock for the festive cycle,” “CNC as per vendor quotation,” “shop registry and fit-out,” or “GST already hitting the current account — OD.” If you cannot write that sentence, you are not ready to pick a product. Mixing two purposes in one EMI is how the file waits.
Numbers that must talk to GST and banking
Last year’s sales in the plan should be reconcilable to GSTR-1 / 3B and to credits in the operating account. Purchases should not be a mystery. Debtors and stock should look like the cycle you claim. If cash sales are real, say so — hiding them is worse than disclosing a cash-heavy book.
What to put in the note — and what to leave out
- Constitution, Udyam, GSTIN, and who signs — matching the KYC.
- Use of funds split: plant vs stock vs premises. Quotations attached, not summarised as “misc.”
- Own contribution or margin you can evidence.
- Existing EMIs and limits — silence here is a bureau surprise later.
- Leave out: slogan market-share claims, copied Wikipedia industry history, and a scheme percentage copied from a forward.
New unit versus running unit
A running GST unit is mostly a bridge from books to purpose. A new unit is a project: who will buy, what you will put in, and how many months before cash is positive. Scheme doors (PMEGP, Stand-Up India) add agency rules — still not a reason to invent sales. EMI must fit the cycle; if you need a calculator for the arithmetic, use it as arithmetic, not as a sanction. Related: /blog/calculate-business-loan-emi when that piece is on the desk.
How this desk uses the plan
We use it to map term versus WC versus LAP, and to stop a scheme name being stapled onto the wrong vintage. VFC Rise is a private DSA desk. The partner lender still reads the file. A neat plan does not override bounces, thin GST, or a dirty bureau.
How to write a business plan for a bank loan — MSME version
Business plan for loan searches imagine a pitch deck. Business plan for MSME loan on a credit desk is shorter: activity, location, object of funds, contribution, GSTIN, account that receives sales, and existing EMIs. MSME project report for loan is that story plus quotations if plant is involved.
Project report vs business plan — which file you actually have
- Running unit, stock need: purpose note + GST + banking PDFs.
- New shed or line: project report, vendor quotes, gestation cash.
- Scheme door: format as that portal/agency asks — plus the same books test.
- Never a second set of “plan turnover” that GST will not show.
Numbers that must reconcile
If the plan says ₹X sales and GSTR-3B says otherwise, credit will query. If contribution is “a relative will arrange”, that is not evidence. We map purpose to product. We do not write fiction for login.
Key takeaways
- A use-of-funds note that matches GST and banking beats a thick copied plan.
- New projects need quotations and contribution, not slogans.
- Scheme formats are extra — they do not replace books.
- VFC Rise does not sanction a plan. The lender reads the file.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a 40-page project report for a stock limit?
- Usually no. A running unit asking for working capital needs a tight use-of-funds note and books that match. A greenfield or PMEGP-style project needs more: quotations, own contribution, and a gestation story. Length is not virtue.
- Can I show projected sales that GST has never seen?
- You can write them. Credit will mark them. Projections that ignore last year’s GSTR-1 and the current account are decoration. Explain a step-up; do not invent a hockey stick.
- Will VFC Rise write the plan and guarantee the loan?
- We help you name purpose and product so the note matches the file. We do not sell a canned project report as a sanction, and we do not lend.
- Do I need a long business plan for an MSME loan?
- A running GST unit often needs a one-page use-of-funds note, not a 40-page MBA deck. A new project needs a project report with quotations, contribution and ramp-up. What bankers look in a business plan is whether numbers talk to GST and banking.
- What is a use of funds note?
- One honest paragraph: what you will buy or stock, why, how it earns, and how EMI or interest is paid. Use of funds note beats a copied template with fake hockey-stick sales.
- Is a CA project report mandatory?
- Some scheme and project files ask for a prescribed format. A regular WC file may not. Follow the lender’s checklist. This desk will not sell you a decorative report that GST cannot support.
- Can I copy a sample business plan from the internet?
- Copied plans fail when invoices and the current account disagree. Simple business plan for small business loan should be your object, your buyers, your numbers.
